This mount is modelled after one found at a Hungarian site and currently held at the Egri museum. It is dated to the 10th century. Multiples of these mounts were used along the edge of the purse flap to create a decorative border.
This type of pouch called a Tarsoly are highly decorated with brass fittings and were considered status symbols. Tarsoly have been found as far away as Birka Sweden and are common in Hungary, Moravia and Kievan Rus settlements.
